It’s been a while since I have encountered a book that I was able to finish within a couple of days. “Another Gospel?” by Alisa Childers is one of those books. I picked this book up on a Thursday and finished it by the end of the day on Saturday. Not to vaunt myself but to vaunt this book. It was captivating, informative, convicting, and eye opening.
Overview
‘Another Gospel?’ is a book written by Childers to show forth the new (though not new as she will explain) wave of apostate Christianity called: “Progressive Christianity” Through her own life experience, Childers shares her battle with “deconstruction” and how it almost shook her off the faith. But through God’s sovereign and loving hand she ended up doubling down on Christianity and found Jesus Christ at the very center of it all.
Childers goes through step-by-step revealing the apostate lies of Progressive Christianity and how they seek to cast doubt and confusion on the real faith. She shows how this has been a battle against Christians since the very first century even within the New Testament itself. She then takes each argument and doubt, one-by-one, and shares what the truth really is. Topics like: “Is the Word of God really the Word of God, divinely inspired?” and “Did Jesus really have to die on the cross for our sins?”, which are essential in understanding our faith, she unpacks and proves with simple clarity.
Childers’ personal experience during a series of meetings with a Progressive Christian Pastor and the whirlwind of doubt and confusion through which she went through shows the nearness these words are to her heart. Comments from the pastor like: “I would consider myself a ‘hopeful agnostic.’”, “Is there anyone in here who still believes that Adam and Eve were literal people?”, and “How many of you believe the Bible is God’s Word?” (answers to which he then casts doubt on.) make the conversation feel eerie and dark but you can live through Childers’ experience and come out the other side to the light as she walks you through each with passion.
Conclusion
Overall the book is a refreshing light during our dark times. The devil is at constant work trying to cast doubt on Jesus and what He came to do and this book stands as a defense against those attacks. If you have ever experienced doubt and have genuine questions about Christianity then get this book and read it with care.
Doubt will come, don’t think it weird when it does, but don’t close it up and assume you can just run from it. Seek truth, seek answers. Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the light…” A true pursuit of truth…. will always lead you to Him.
