The last book report I wrote was on a book which I recommended every Christian must read. Now of course there are many other books which I would recommend everyone to read but today I want to turn my attention to an author everyone must read.
A.W. Tozer
I simply don’t have words to tell you how much this man’s words have helped my walk. If you have read my intro you know that I was first introduced to Tozer when my Father handed me a Tozer Study Bible. After that I have tried to get my hands on everything he has written. Including a book that I just recently finished entitled: Experiencing the Presence of God.
In this book James L Snyder gathers Tozer’s writings and teachings on the book of Hebrews and compiles them together to show the believer what life we now have access to in Christ. Tozer, as usual, expresses his concern with the amount of modern day believers (this was in the mid 20th century) who fall short of the true Christian life that Christ offers to His followers. Therefore he writes, using the book of Hebrews as a guideline, to more accurately explain not only who Jesus is, but also what He has done and is doing, and how we are to live in and with Him.
The Presence of God
Tozer pleads with his readers to seek God above all else. Using passages such as Psalm 27:4, 37:4, Galatians 2:20, and 1 Cor 2:2, he shows how those who truly had a walk with God did by seeking Him daily. It seems that the men and women of God whose lives truly stick out as if they have something special about them are only like that because they seek God. They have cast themselves entirely on Christ and abandon all things just to know Him. Their care for the world has dissipated, their worries are thrown on their King, their desires are shaped by their Lord, and their life is found in Jesus.
Tozer calls this: “experiencing the presence of God”. Which he believes is something every Chrisitan has the privilege of doing in and through Christ and yet so many of us fall short of attaining it. It is a day by day, hour by hour, walk with Him. In doing so He becomes more real to you than a crowd of people right in front of you. And this is what Christ wants with you! Tozer makes it clear, we are not seeking God because He is hiding from us, just the opposite! He wants to be found! “When thou saidst, Seek my Face, my heart said unto thee, thy face, Lord, will I seek”. God is the one calling out to us. This is of vital importance.
Conclusion
You probably could have guessed it, but yes, get this book. If you want to know how to walk with God on a more intimate level and truly know Him (which is life itself – John 17:3) then Tozer will help you do that. His heart back in the 1900’s extends to us now in 2023. Pleading with us, begging, that we would seek Him daily. Don’t let that go away without doing so.
