The happiest I’ve ever been has been in the moments of quiet gentle trust in the Lord. Regardless of the circumstance, no matter the difficulty, and aside from the darkness, what will keep me happy in the midst of those times is trusting in my God. This is my favorite source of happiness by far because it lands much deeper than any form of “happiness” that the world might claim to have. You have no idea what true happiness is until you have freely trusted God with the care of your soul. This is part 3 of 5 in our look at Happiness in Proverbs. To read part 2 click here. “He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.”
Proverbs 16:20
Happiness in Trust
Trust is the backbone of any relationship. Without trust the whole thing is built on lies and nobody has any true connection. The happiness of any relationship depends on this as well. If you could never trust a friend or a spouse then imagine how deprived of happiness your every moment would be. Terrified of having someone stab you in the back, never able to delegate a task, and always looking around your shoulder. There is no happiness in that.
Thankfully we have a God who has declared and proved His trustworthiness since the beginning of time. His blood has been shed (Eph 1:7), His power is infinite (Matt 28:18), His love is unconditional (Jer 31:3), and His mercy never fails (Psalm 136). He has promised to care for you (Matt 6:32-33) and has done so since the day you were created (which He determined by the way [Acts 17:25]). Therefore we trust in Him. We commit the keeping of our souls to Him. And in this trust we find happiness that this world knows nothing of.
Christ Our Trust
We don’t trust a nameless God and we don’t trust an identity in the sky that is apparently all-powerful. Rather we trust a man: Jesus Christ. Through whom God was pleased to put the fullness of Himself (Col 2:9). He is perfectly God and perfectly man (Heb 2:17). Understand that it is Him alone that you are to put your trust in (Gal 2:20). Happiness will come when you trust that He means what He says when He says: “Come unto me…and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28).
I don’t know what else to encourage you to do except trust in Him. Don’t just agree with me because it’s what you hear every preacher say. Don’t just nod your head because it sounds churchy. You need to genuinely trust Him. Trust Him now. Trust Him that He has the next 5 minutes of your life more thought out than you could ever imagine. The next 5 days, 5 months, 5 years, and forever is in His hands. Trust Jesus and see how happy you will be!
